Deborah A. Karlewicz, Partner

Deborah A. Karlewicz’s practice is dedicated to the specialties of health care law, regulatory compliance and complex medical malpractice cases. She has represented practitioners in professional disciplinary proceedings before the New York State Department of Health – Office of Professional Medical Conduct (OPMC) and other health care professionals before the New York State Education Department-Office of Professional Discipline (OPD), as well as through New York State Justice Center Investigations. Ms. Karlewicz is admitted to practice in the state courts of New York and the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.

Highlights of her recent successes include:

-Summary Judgment granted in Nassau County for a radiologist in a matter involving claims of failure to diagnose a foreign body on imaging.

-Summary Judgment granted in Suffolk County for a surgeon in a matter involving claims of a transection of a common bile duct.

-A voluntary discontinuance after summary judgment was filed in Bronx County for an orthopedic surgeon in a matter involving claims of failure to diagnose a post-operative infection leading to a stroke.

-Summary Judgment granted in Bronx County on behalf of a major hospital in a matter involving claims of failure to timely and appropriately treat a patient in the emergency room resulting in death.

Ms. Karlewicz is a member of the New York State Bar Association and NYSBA’s Health Law section as well as the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association.

Ms. Karlewicz received her law degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where she received the Taintor Memorial Award and was a finalist in the Client Counseling Competition. She also obtained her B.S.N. from Columbia University and was a practicing registered nurse for twelve years, concentrating in oncology and emergency room nursing at major metropolitan area teaching hospitals.
